Hello all! Time for the latest renovation update – the closet build!
If you’d like to catch up on our renovation progress thus far, check out our other renovation posts here. Our renovation, a.k.a. The Reno Room, consists of a floor plan change, master bedroom, bathroom, laundry room and mud room.
Closet Build
As per our latest floorplan update – we decided to install a full wall of closets/storage in the master bedroom. This is a 14-foot wall, so it’s a ton of storage; however, as it’s come to be expected in this renovation, it has some quirks. We needed to decide how to proceed with the closet build.
Quirks:
The attic access is in this area and needs to remain accessible. Also, our safe needs to fit in a recessed cubby from a doorway that was eliminated. This takes up about 5 ½-6 ft, but the rest of the wall is open.
Research:
Again, after much research on Pinterest, sitting down with graph paper and a pencil, and many renditions later, we drafted three options.
Options:
Option 1:
Most time efficient (as in “I can complete entirely without Thomas’s help”) but least cost-effective. Create the entire closet area with Ikea Pax units.
Option 2:
More cost-effective, but more time-consuming for Thomas. Build the closets ourselves with finished plywood, using the same dimensions as the Ikea units. However, to save a bit of time, install Ikea doors as opposed to building them. Utilize the Ikea inserts (drawers, baskets). Cut the shelves and paint the units to match the doors.
Option 3:
Least expensive, but the most commitment from Thomas. Build the closets to our specifications, install a chest of drawers (purchased) and clothes rods. Purchase bifold closet doors and retrofit them into French doors. This is the most customizable to our specific quirks, but also takes the most effort from Thomas who’s time is extremely limited for the reno and could be better utilized elsewhere. Also, to stay within budget, the doors would only be 6 ft as opposed to just shy of 8 ft (floor to ceiling).
Decision:
So, what did we decide?
After many conversations and heavy thinking regarding budget and time constraints, we chose option one. Yes, it was the most expensive, almost double option 3! But it makes the most sense for us since I can complete the entire project on my own and Thomas can focus on something more pertinent…
Like installing plumbing, or flooring, or drywall, or light fixtures, or relocating the washer and dryer, or pouring concrete so there isn’t a giant trench through the center of the bathroom…and the list goes on!
Ikea!
TJ, Damaris and I ventured off to Ikea a few weekends back and made it final. That was a trip! We drove the whole way back home in a blizzard the entire way (insert eye roll here). What should have been 2 hours took 4! I am nothing if not determined!
Let’s build some cabinets!
Will keep you updated on the install. Let you know how it goes!
