Our house was built in 1952, officially making it over 70 years old! Certain things have never been updated, re: the 70-year-old plumbing in the garage bathroom, also known as our master bathroom, which was also not updated since the house was built and not in a functioning state when we began the reno.
We’ve been a bit stalled over the last month due to illness running rampant in our family. Strep, then pneumonia, flu, then strep again! Plus these lingering coughs, going on for weeks. BUT…we finalized the floor plan layout! Woo hoo!
Without further ado…
Life is all about compromise
There were a few compromises, but this floorplan seems to make the best use of our space. If you remember our initial list of wants/needs:
- master bedroom with walk-in closet
- small office (NOT in the bedroom)
- 3/4 bathroom (shower, no tub)
- laundry room
- mudroom with outdoor access and dog wash
Well, in a 14 ft x 26 ft area, that was just not realistic for our family. We had to eliminate the office, but in the meantime, I found this amazing cabinet on Marketplace that will give us the workspace we need.
This old house and 70-year-old clay pipes
The concrete floor is all jacked up and turns out, our 70 year old clay pipe plumbing is still in tact! Amazing! Very exciting and much quicker than having to replumb below grade all the way out to the septic system. We still need to: dig under the old toilet hookup; cut the old pipe and install PVC to connect new drains and lines for the shower, sink, laundry sink, washer, and toilet. Then we should be in business!
Oh, almost forgot! We’ve gotten a few walls framed also! Progress! Slow but steady!
Next up…
Now that we know the underground portion of the plumbing is valid, we are pressing pause on the bathroom/laundry/mudroom areas of the renovation and our focus is on the bedroom. Hoping to have everyone moved back into their own bedrooms before Christmas (what a gift!) and furniture/storage/clothing/clutter out of the living/dining room so we can decorate and put up our tree! Fingers crossed!
Next up: frame the rest of the bedroom (walls, closet space, electrical panel). One step at a time!
